A blood pressure reading looks like a fraction, say 118/76. Those two numbers tell you a lot about how hard your heart and blood vessels are working. The top number, systolic pressure, is the force of blood against your artery walls while your heart is beating. It tends to rise with age as arteries become stiffer, which is why it gets the most attention after 50.
The bottom number, diastolic pressure, is the pressure while your heart rests between beats. Both numbers matter, and a reading counts in the higher category if either one crosses the line.

The American Heart Association sorts readings into five groups: Normal, Elevated, Stage 1, Stage 2 and Hypertensive Crisis.
